The IDEAL Approach to Guardianship and Its Alternatives

Join us virtually for this program which will introduce the IDEAL Tool and Resource Guide for Maryland Healthcare Settings.Ā  The guide offers a patient-centered approach for exploring alternatives to guardianship that can address the needs of patients who may be experiencing diminished capacity.Ā  It includes a tool for identifying alternatives to guardianship and a variety of resources.Ā  This program will also feature a brief overview of the guardianship court process.

Speakers:

Sandy Balan (she/her) is a staff attorney at Disability Rights Maryland (DRM) on the Developmental Disabilities, Healthcare and Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) team. Sandyā€™s work primarily focuses on providing education and advocacy to clients, their families and their support systems regarding supported decision making and other less restrictive alternatives to guardianship.

 

Nisa C. Subasinghe, Esq., (she/her) is the Domestic & Guardianship Program Manager with Juvenile and Family Services at the Maryland Judiciaryā€™s Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC).Ā  Her work at AOC focuses on issues affecting children and families who come through the court system.Ā  Specifically, Ms. Subasinghe provides training and technical assistance to judges, magistrates, court staff, and others who handle domestic, guardianship, and related matters.
